I think that Canadian companies have neglected the great number of refining companies, esp. the privately-owned ones. Many private refinery companies have thrived by stealing oil from the state-owned oil companies -- why not attract them to the Canadian oil sands?

JC is perfectly right. The Americans are promoting an energy strategy that would give it a stark advantage in an era of dramatically increasing competition for fossil fuels. While China is using up its coal resources, the Americans are cleverly saving theirs whose capacity in fact may be bountiful enough to provide energy security for at least another century. Who do you think will win this game? I think no nation will enjoy prosperity unless we reach the higher stage of world development, the futuristic world of Star Trek!

Please specify which deal you are speaking of here.
A more obvious example of the Bush administration's unwillingness to allow Chinese state-run oil companies to acquire American-controlled oil assets was the Unocal deal/debacle.

The actual truth is that the U.S. is trying to block China's economic growth with oil as a weapon. Not very long ago U.S. politicians soundly killed a deal in which a Chinese oil company attempted to acquire less than 1% of the assets of a U.S. oil company, although the deal would have been purely a market-oriented move. There can be no doubt that certain U.S. politicians do not want to see a strong Chinese economy -- something which they view as a threat to U.S. superpower status. Ironically, however, Bush is urging China to embrace the international oil market. Can Chinese really trust the "offer" by Bush? I doubt it.

This was a great read. I want to learn more about China's strategy with regard to purchasing Canada's commodities. I'm also interested in the trade deals that give China access to other Canadian products.

The military dimension is another sensitive but important issue. If the US and China go to war, would Canada continue to supply oil to China? Just how deep an alliance is Canada prepared to develop with the Middle Kingdom?
